Inspired by the shape of a gigantic sacred tree of Alishan, the Chiayi Tower has an outer wall that replicates the look of real wood and is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Chiayi.
The name of the tower is derived from a legend that is popular among the plains aborigines, who believed that there used to be two suns in the sky. Some tribesmen chased the sun all their life, but to no avail. Eventually, their sons, who had followed in their fathers’ footsteps, shot the sun. On the first floor, you will encounter a martyrs' shrine that honors the fallen soldiers, and temporary exhibitions often take place here. What’s worth noting is that there is a 40-meter-high empty space in the center of the tower that mimics the crack in the center of that sacred tree. Go to the 10th floor and walk across an almost terrifying glass skywalk to have a bird’s-eye view from 40 meters above the ground.
On the 11th floor, a nice café with great views serves as an ideal place to chat with friends over a pleasant afternoon tea. Or take the elevator to the lookout on top of the tower for a 360-degree panoramic view of Chiayi City, which is impressive especially in the rain. Don’t miss out next time when you are in southern Taiwan!
