Do not leave Fenqihu without trying its famed aiyu jelly, and make sure you stop by at Mr. Aiyu’s House for a taste of authentic aiyu jelly. It is made out of the gel from a variety of fig seeds which are harvested between September and January. The seeds are “washed” by rubbing a cotton bag full of them in cold water, and the gel then sets into a jelly with seasonal flavors such as mulberries and passion fruits.
Mr. Aiyu himself was one of the townsmen who were granted the right to harvest these wild fig seeds on the federal land of Alishan. As his body has started to fade with age, his children didn’t want him to continue with hard labor work and therefore converted the courtyard into a shop selling these cooling cups of drink-dessert. The signature drink with the perfect amount of lime, plum and aiyu jelly is a favorite of many, while the chewy mulberry aiyu jelly is only available in April but very worth a try. Served with sweetened beverages, iced coffee, milk, fruit tea, honey or lemon or lime juice, aiyu jelly is a natural and refreshing choice if you want something thirst-quenching to cool down from Taiwan’s summer heat.
