"Jiufen" is located in the north of Taiwan. Before the prosperity of gold mining, it was mainly for mining camphor and to cook it there, because there are 90 camphor stoves, and ten stoves were counted as one portion, there were a total of nine portions, over time, it got its name as Jiufen.
During the Japanese occupation, Jiufen was a thriving mountain town and an important gold mining area in Taiwan. However, as the mining industry declined, Jiufen fell into a period of silence. It slowly gained fame again due to its appearance in several internationally renowned films, such as "A City of Sadness," which highlighted its nostalgic atmosphere and unique charm. This resurgence transformed Jiufen into a popular tourist destination, making it one of the must-visit spots for foreign travelers to Taiwan.
When it comes to Jiufen, the most famous spot is Jiufen Old Street on Jishan Street, lined with a variety of unique shops. The "A-Mei Tea House," rumored to be a filming location for Hayao Miyazaki's animated film "Spirited Away," is a must-visit landmark for many tourists. Here, you can stroll along the narrow stone-paved streets, admire the ancient buildings adorned with red lanterns, and savor authentic Taiwanese tea while enjoying the stunning mountain and sea views of Jiufen.
Of course, the charm of Jiufen goes beyond its surface beauty and bustling atmosphere; the delicious food at Jiufen Old Street is a big reason why many people keep coming back. Some highlights include: the chewy and delightful "A-Gan's Taro Balls," where you can enjoy tasty taro balls while taking in unbeatable sea views; the "Golden Branch Red Fermented Taiwanese Meatballs," filled with bamboo shoots and red fermented pork; the hearty "Fish Ball Soup" from "Fish Ball Uncle"; and the hidden gem "Scallion Oil Rice Cake" from a small shop near the post office, where the soft rice cakes are cut into small pieces and drizzled with fragrant scallion oil. Of course, no visit to Jiufen Old Street is complete without trying the traditional snack "A-Lan's Herbal Rice Cake."

Located in northern Taiwan, Yehliu Geopark is a remarkable geological site shaped over time by coastal erosion, weathering, and tectonic activity. It is even praised as "the most Mars-like place on Earth" by CNN, thanks to its unique and stunning rock formations.
The most famous attraction in the park is undoubtedly the "Queen's Head." This rock, over 4,000 years old, resembles the elegant profile of a woman. However, due to weathering, the neck of the Queen's Head is gradually becoming thinner, and experts have warned that it may eventually break. Therefore, anyone wanting to witness this natural wonder should make it a priority to visit while they still can.
Yehliu Geopark is often praised as a natural geological classroom due to its many unique rock formations. The park is divided into three main areas, each featuring distinct geological landscapes. The first area is known for its "mushroom rocks" and "candlestick stones," while the second area is home to the famous "Queen's Head." The third area contains wave-cut platforms and other special rock formations, making it an important ecological conservation zone. During low tide, visitors may spot sea cucumbers, hermit crabs, and other marine life, and in spring and autumn, migratory birds can also be seen passing through.
Of course, being so close to the sea, Yehliu is famous for its fresh seafood. Located at the border of Taipei City and New Taipei City, Yangmingshan is known as the "back garden of Taipei." It is one of Taiwan's oldest national parks and features a wealth of natural landscapes and cultural history.
Yangmingshan was originally named Caoshan. At that time, the authorities were concerned that bandits might hide in the forests to steal sulfur, so they periodically set fire to the mountains. This led to the area being covered primarily by the five-segment grass. In 1950, when then-President Chiang Kai-shek was ridiculed for living in Caoshan and accused of being a "bandit," the name was changed to Yangmingshan in order to avoid such associations. The new name was chosen to honor the Ming dynasty philosopher Wang Yangming.
The geological structure here is unique, featuring dome-shaped volcanoes and crater lakes. It is one of the few areas in Taiwan with ongoing volcanic activity. Some scholars believe that the Datun Volcano Group, which includes Qixing Mountain, Datun Mountain, Zhuzi Mountain, Huangzui Mountain, Miantian Mountain, Xiangtian Mountain, Dajian Mountain, and Shamao Mountain, consists of active volcanoes that may erupt in the future. As such, it is an important location for studying volcanic activity.
When visiting Yangmingshan, you can't miss attractions such as the Qingtian Grassland, Xiaoyoukeng, Dream Lake, Yangming Bootstore, the Flower Clock, Lengshuikeng, and the Maokong Hot Springs. Additionally, Zhuzi Lake features many seasonal flowers, including calla lilies and hydrangeas, as well as native Taiwanese cherry blossoms, Japanese cherry blossoms, plum blossoms, azaleas, and camellias. During the flower season from December to April each year, the famous giant Flower Clock attracts large crowds of visitors who come to enjoy the blooming flowers and beautiful scenery.
When visiting Yangmingshan, you definitely want to try the local cuisine. Many restaurants use fresh wild vegetables from the area to prepare dishes like mountain vegetables stir-fried with taro cakes and cold betel nut flowers. For meat lovers, the signature free-range chicken, known for its tender and flavorful meat, and the Michelin Bib Gourmand-recommended golden crispy chicken are must-try dishes that you shouldn't miss.
- Address: No. 1, Zhuzihu Road, Beitou District, Taipei City, Taiwan
- Transportation:: If you want to go directly to Yangmingshan, you can take the MRT to Jiantan Station and then ride the 260 or Red 5 bus routes. Get off at the Yangmingshan Terminal (the last stop), and then transfer to bus 108 to reach Yangmingshan.

Image source: Taipei City Government Tourism and Communications Bureau
Located in the Wenshan District of Taipei, the Maokong Gondola connects the Taipei Zoo and the Maokong area. Spanning 4.03 kilometers, the gondola has been in operation since 2007. It not only promotes tourism in Maokong but also serves as a popular recreational spot for many Taipei residents. Additionally, it offers a unique way to experience Taiwan's attractions from a different perspective.
The name "Maokong" originates from the local geography, where rivers have eroded the rocks to form "pothole" formations. In Taiwanese, uneven surfaces are referred to as "yongmian." However, since "yong" sounds similar to "cat" in Taiwanese, the name eventually evolved to "Maokong." Visitors can ride the "Maokong Eye" crystal cabin gondola, which features a transparent bottom that offers a 360-degree view of iconic landmarks such as Taipei 101 and Zhinan Temple. If you ride it at night, you'll also be able to overlook the entire Taipei cityscape illuminated at night.
Situated at an elevation of over 300 meters, Maokong has a mild climate that is ideal for tea cultivation. It was once one of the largest production areas for Tieguanyin and Wenshan Baozhong tea in Taipei. However, as time has passed, traditional tea farming has gradually declined, and many tea plantations have transformed into tourist attractions. While promoting tea culture, they have also developed unique tea-infused dishes, such as tea fried rice, tea chicken soup, tea buns, and Tieguanyin ice cream. Additionally, the local specialty, crisp and delicious green bamboo shoots, offers flavors you won't find anywhere else.
This area is also perfect for a family day trip. You can start by visiting the Taipei Zoo and then take the Maokong Gondola to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Maokong and sample some delicious food.
- Address: No. 8, Section 2, Xinguang Road, Wenshan District, Taipei City
- Opening hours: 9:00-21:00 (extended to 22:00 on holidays)
- Tickets: The ticket prices are divided into three categories: 70 NT dollars for one station, 100 NT dollars for two stations, and 120 NT dollars for three stations.

As many of you may know, the artifacts in the National Palace Museum originally belonged to the Palace Museum in the Forbidden City in Beijing. Due to the turmoil of war, these cultural treasures were relocated to Taiwan. However, the Taipei National Palace Museum officially opened in 1965 and began regularly rotating its collection of precious artifacts from the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, offering both permanent and special exhibitions for visitors to appreciate.
For those who follow the National Palace Museum on social media, you might know that not only does the museum's team create engaging content, but its cultural and creative products are also quite impressive. Each year, these creative merchandise items generate significant revenue for the museum.
Can you believe that artifacts can be turned into dishes? Yes, you read that correctly! The National Palace Museum's Silks Palace Restaurant has transformed cultural treasures into delicious meals, allowing you to not only appreciate the beauty of the exhibits visually but also savor their historical and artistic flavors. Three must-try dishes include: Jadeite Cabbage, Meat-shaped Stone, and Fragrant Rice Wrapped in Phoenix Sleeves.

Located in the Zhongzheng District of Taipei, the main building is a striking white marble structure standing about 70 meters tall, topped with blue glazed tiles. Its eye-catching design has made the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall one of the most iconic landmarks in Taipei.
As the name suggests, the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall was built to commemorate the late President Chiang Kai-shek (also known as Jiang Jieshi). Since its completion in 1980, the memorial hall has displayed many aspects of Chiang's life and achievements. It is said that there is a hidden basement within the hall that houses numerous items used by Chiang during his lifetime. Additionally, the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall has been the site of many significant gatherings and protests in Taiwan's history. Therefore, in the hearts of the Taiwanese people, the memorial hall is not just a tribute to Chiang Kai-shek; it also represents a witness to Taiwan's journey from authoritarianism to democracy. It is a crucial location in the development of Taiwan's democratic progress.
The most well-known event at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall is the hourly changing of the guard ceremony. However, starting from July 15, 2024, the military honor guard will be moved from the Chiang Kai-shek statue hall to Democracy Avenue outside the memorial hall as part of the effort to implement transitional justice. Since they will no longer be on duty inside, the changing of the guard ceremony, which has taken place for 44 years, will officially come to an end after the final ceremony at 5 PM on July 14. Therefore, visitors will no longer see the changing of the guard at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall in the future.
On either side of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall are the National Theater and the National Concert Hall, which regularly host various cultural events. The surrounding area also features beautiful gardens and fountains, making the memorial hall a popular leisure spot for many Taipei residents, especially on weekends and holidays.
Located in the city center, the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall is surrounded by a variety of culinary options. Just a short distance away is the Nanmen Market, which offers an array of authentic traditional Taiwanese snacks. Notable establishments include He Huan Knife-cut Noodles, Kuo Ping Fried Rice and Noodles, Jinlong Pork Jerky, Hsiang Chi Barbecue, Li Jia Huzhou Zong, Jin Feng Braised Pork Rice, and Hangzhou Soup Dumplings. These local delicacies provide visitors an opportunity to explore the rich flavors of Taiwanese cuisine after their visit to the memorial hall.

Taipei attractions 7. National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall
Located in the Xinyi District of Taipei, the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall was established for a similar reason as the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. It was built in 1964 to commemorate the centenary of Dr. Sun Yat-sen's birth and was officially opened to the public in 1972.
The main building stands 30.4 meters tall and is surrounded by 50 majestic columns. Its roof resembles a great bird spreading its wings, making it an important venue for cultural and artistic performances in Taiwan. The hall features numerous large performance spaces and galleries that regularly host domestic and international art exhibitions and events. Notably, it is the venue for the most frequent "Golden" award ceremonies, including the Golden Horse Awards, Golden Bell Awards, and Golden Melody Awards.
Another well-known feature of the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, similar to the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, is the changing of the military honor guard, which attracts many international visitors. Unfortunately, the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is undergoing renovations and is closed starting February 26, 2024. The estimated construction period is expected to last until the end of 2026, meaning that visitors will temporarily miss the opportunity to witness the changing of the guard.
When it comes to the food near the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, there are several must-try dishes. These include the scallion pancake rice ball, which uses a scallion pancake instead of sticky rice to wrap the filling; the popular "Zhou's Tofu Roll" from Guangfu Market, known for its thin skin and generous filling; the "Unnamed Scallion Cake and Fried Dough," made by hand daily for over 40 years; and the "Beida Hang Soup Dumplings," often referred to as the affordable version of Din Tai Fung. Alongside the National Palace Museum and Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, Longshan Temple in Wanhua District is one of the top three attractions for international tourists visiting Taiwan. It is also one of the oldest and most representative temples in Taipei, having been established in 1738, giving it nearly 300 years of history. The temple has undergone several reconstructions due to natural disasters and wartime destruction. The current architectural style blends traditional southern Chinese elements with local Taiwanese features.
Speaking of Longshan Temple, there is a long-standing mysterious legend associated with it. According to the tale, during World War II, the temple was bombed, yet the statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva miraculously remained unscathed. This event was regarded as a divine miracle.
Longshan Temple has witnessed the development of Taipei from the Qing Dynasty and through the Japanese occupation to the present day. It has always been a spiritual center for the local people of Wanhua and serves as a reflection of Taipei's culture.
There’s a saying that wherever there are people, there is a community. Located next to Longshan Temple, Huaxi Street Night Market was a filming location for the movie "Monga." This has allowed many viewers of the film to gain a deeper understanding of the lives of the local people in Wanhua.
Since we’re talking about Huaxi Street, we can't overlook the variety of delicious foods at Huaxi Street Night Market. Highlights include the famous snake meat dishes and the Michelin-recommended "Xiao Wang Zhu Gua," which has a 45-year history—its must-try signature dish is the clear soup with pork and melon. Another favorite is "Chang Hong Mian Dian," known for its traditional noodle-making techniques and fresh ingredients, especially the chrysanthemum noodles served in a flavorful broth. Additionally, "San Liu Shi Ba" is consistently ranked among Taipei's top ten places for tangyuan (glutinous rice balls), and you shouldn't miss their red and white tangyuan, fried mochi, and red bean soup. Lastly, "Liang Xi Hao" has over a century of tradition, offering the classic flavor of squid soup; their mixed soup is a must-try, featuring squid, fish crisp, marlin balls, shrimp balls, and cuttlefish balls. The history of Ximen dates back to the Qing Dynasty, originally a commercial area near the "West Gate" of the city. During the Japanese occupation, it began to develop into a leisure and commercial district, modeled after Tokyo's Asakusa, and eventually became one of the most vibrant shopping areas in Taipei.
However, in the mid-1980s, Ximen experienced a decline as Taipei's commercial center shifted eastward. It wasn't until the opening of the Bannan Line of the MRT that it became a favorite gathering spot for young people. In Ximending, you can witness the blend of history and modernity, with landmarks like the "Ximen Red House," an octagonal building with over a century of history; the well-preserved, retro-style "Bopiliao Historical Block"; the "Rainbow Crosswalk," symbolizing diversity and inclusiveness; and the "Taipei Cinema Park," showcasing the history of Taiwanese cinema. Therefore, the pedestrian area of Ximen is a must-visit spot for many international tourists in Taipei.
Walking through the streets of the Ximen shopping district, you'll find everything from trendy brand stores and clothing shops to unique cultural items. Of course, when it comes to food, Ximending has plenty to offer. For example, there's "Ah-Chung Mian-Xian," where you have to stand or sit wherever you can to enjoy their famous noodles. "Lao Tian Lu," known for its exclusive secret recipe braised dishes, especially popular for its duck wings and duck tongues, is a must-try. You can't miss "Ximen Noodle Shop," a 60-year-old establishment famous for its cold noodles and braised pork knuckle rice. Unfortunately, Ximending in Wanhua District of Taipei is no longer as lively as it was in the years before the pandemic. Shilin Night Market, located in the Shilin District of Taipei, has its origins tracing back to the Japanese colonial period. In the 1950s, with the rise of activities at the Shilin Ciyun Temple, vendors began to gather, gradually forming the first generation of the night market as we know it today. Shilin Night Market is primarily divided into two main areas: one surrounds the Ciyun Temple and features traditional snacks, while the other is located on Jihe Road and hosts the new Shilin Market. Tamsui Old Street, located in Tamsui District of New Taipei City, is one of the most popular attractions in the Taipei area and is also among the top ten old streets in Taiwan. It is a charming destination that blends history, delicious food, and natural scenery.
The history of Tamsui Old Street dates back to the 17th century. It was once Taiwan's largest international port and became an important trading hub in northern Taiwan after the 19th century when it opened as a commercial port. Known for the export of tea and sugar, Tamsui Old Street became the center of commercial activity. However, during the Japanese colonial period, the port began to silt up significantly, leading to the decline of Tamsui as a bustling trading center, with activities gradually shifting to Keelung Port. Nonetheless, the unique architecture and natural beauty of Tamsui provided an opportunity for this historic old street to transform into a popular tourist destination.
To this day, Tamsui Old Street has preserved many well-maintained historical buildings, such as the "Fort San Domingo" built by the Dutch, the century-old "Aletheia University," and the "Fisherman’s Wharf," where visitors can take a ferry to enjoy the beautiful views of the Tamsui River. Strolling along Zhongzheng Road, Chongjian Street, and Qingshui Street allows you to appreciate a blend of Western, Minnan, and Japanese architectural styles. The stunning sunset views from the golden waterfront path along the Tamsui River at dusk are a must-see.

This bathhouse was the largest public bath in East Asia and is now known as the Beitou Hot Springs Museum.
If you have the chance to visit the museum, be sure to admire the extremely rare mineral known as Beitou Stone. It is said that this mineral has only been found in the Beitou Hot Springs in Taiwan and the Tamagawa Onsen in Akita Prefecture, Japan. Beitou Stone is the only mineral in the world named after a place in Taiwan, making it a very precious geological heritage of the country. This mineral takes an average of 130 years to grow just 1 centimeter, and the largest specimen is currently on display at the Beitou Hot Springs Museum.
Beitou Hot Springs is renowned for its rich minerals and therapeutic effects. The spring water can be categorized into three types: white sulfur, green sulfur, and iron sulfur. White sulfur water is white and weakly acidic, while green sulfur has a stronger acidity and higher corrosive properties. Iron sulfur water appears light reddish-brown due to its iron content. The term "Beitou Hot Springs area" refers to several hot spring regions, including Thermal Valley, Xingyi Road Hot Springs, Phoenix Hot Springs, Longfeng Hot Springs, and Hushanli Hot Springs, with Thermal Valley being the most well-known among them.
Since Beitou Hot Springs’ water contains sulfur, it is very beneficial for the skin and joints. Every holiday, many people visit Beitou to enjoy the healing effects of the hot springs.
Of course, when visiting Beitou Hot Springs, there are several recommended attractions to explore besides soaking in the baths. These include the "Beitou Library," which is rated as one of the most beautiful public libraries in the world, the century-old "Xinbeitou Station," the natural hot spring known as "Geothermal Valley," which is famous for its sulfur springs, and the former public bath from the Japanese era, now transformed into the "Beitou Hot Springs Museum." For hiking enthusiasts, the newly constructed lakeside trail offers a leisurely way to enjoy the scenic beauty of Geothermal Valley.
After enjoying a soak in the hot springs, there's nothing better than indulging in delicious food. You can't miss the "Bomb Scallion Pancake," which bursts with flavor when you take a bite, or the fresh and sweet "Shuimao Small Squid Rice Noodles." The "Fengqingyang Snack Shop," known as the Beitou version of Din Tai Fung, is also a must-try, along with "Aizai Cai Braised Pork Rice," which CNN recommends as a must-eat in Taipei. Don’t forget to sample the rich broth and chewy noodles of "Sujia Beef Noodles," one of Beitou's top three beef noodle dishes, and the "Hot Spring Ramen," a popular choice for hot spring enthusiasts. All of these delicious options are famous around Beitou Hot Springs, and you definitely need to give them a try!
