Travel should never be confined by rigid boundaries—even with just an eight-hour window, you can dive deep and experience a city just like a local. Recently, we received a special request from Mr. R, who wanted to make the most of his cruise layover at Kaohsiung Port to craft a memorable Taiwan chapter for his voyage. Who says a quick stopover can't be exquisite? Whatever you need, we are always here for you.
Trust Across the Ocean: A Heartwarming Arrangement from Keelung to Kaohsiung
Taiwan boasts two stunning harbors—Keelung Port in the north and Kaohsiung Port in the south—serving as vital gateways for international cruise ships traversing the Asia-Pacific region. On the eve of Christmas 2024, we received a message from Mr. R. He was arriving in Taiwan via a cruise ship with a group of close friends and hoped to deeply experience the warmth and culture of Southern Taiwan during their brief single-day stopover at Kaohsiung Port.
To ensure this group of 7 to 8 companions could travel elegantly and gain deep insights within their limited time, we arranged a spacious mini-bus and paired them with a knowledgeable English-speaking guide. More than just a driver, our guide acted as a local storyteller, weaving tales of this vibrant harbor city throughout their journey.
A Classic One-Day Port City Tour: From Zen Mountains to Night Market Bustle
For Mr. R and his group, we handpicked Kaohsiung’s most iconic cultural landmarks, ensuring they returned to the ship with a complete and unforgettable memory of the city:
1. Fo Guang Shan: The Soul-Stirring Serenity of Buddha's Light

As Taiwan's largest Buddhist monastery, its solemn atmosphere instantly dissolves any travel fatigue. We guided Mr. R’s group through the grand Buddha Museum, allowing them to feel the magnificence and compassion of Eastern religious art amidst the monumental Buddha statues and peaceful corridors.
✨ Must-See Highlight
- The Buddha Museum & the 108-Meter Big Buddha: Walking down the vast "Great Path to Buddhahood," eight symmetrical pagodas tower on either side, leading your gaze to the world's tallest bronze sitting Buddha standing proudly against the blue sky. This breathtaking blend of grandeur and tranquility left Mr. R’s group completely awestruck the moment they stepped inside.
- Underground Palace Exhibition (Main Hall): Our guide specially arranged a visit inside the main hall to admire precious Buddhist art and simulated underground palace artifacts. Through interactive modern technology, our guests easily grasped the wisdom and compassion of Eastern culture without needing a deep religious background.
2. Lotus Pond & Surrounding Temples: Stepping into the Legend of the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas

Located in Zuoying, this stunning lake features vibrant traditional temples reflecting beautifully on the water's surface, making it the perfect window for international travelers to experience Taiwan’s rich folk beliefs.
✨ Must-See Highlight
- Dragon and Tiger Pagodas (Enter the Dragon, Exit the Tiger): This is easily Kaohsiung's most legendary architectural marvel. While our guide fluently explained the murals of the Twenty-Four Filial Exemplars and the Judgment Halls in English, the guests were led to "enter through the Dragon’s mouth and exit through the Tiger’s mouth." Upon learning that this ritual symbolizes turning bad luck into good fortune, Mr. R’s companions happily snapped playful photos in front of the pagodas.
- Spring and Autumn Pavilions & Wuli Pavilion: Strolling along the long bridge stretching into the heart of the lake toward Wuli Pavilion, guests enjoyed the poetic sight of lotus flowers swaying in the breeze and the ancient octagonal pavilion standing elegantly in the water.
3. Cijin: Old Street Strolls and Gentle Sea Breezes

Boarding a charming local ferry, a brief 10-minute ride brought us to Cijin, an island directly across the harbor offering a completely different seaside vibe.
✨ Must-See Highlight
- Centennial Kaohsiung Lighthouse (Cijin Lighthouse): We walked up to this unique white octagonal brick lighthouse—the only one of its kind in Taiwan. It offers an unparalleled bird’s-eye view of the entire Kaohsiung Harbor and the bustling ships coming and going. Sitting at the stylish cafe next to it, catching the ocean breeze while looking out at where the sky meets the sea, was pure romance.
- Cijin Star Tunnel: Walking through this lush pathway, transformed from an old military bunker tunnel, guests enjoyed glittering celestial light paintings inside. Emerging from the tunnel, they were greeted by a dramatic view of the vast black sand beach and waves crashing against the cliffs—a truly spectacular "hidden paradise" surprise.
4. Liuhe Night Market: The Ultimate Authentic Taiwanese Ending

After enjoying dinner back on the ship, no trip to Taiwan is complete without experiencing the soul of its culture: the night market. During their evening free time, our guide escorted them off the ship and into the bustling night market to experience the lively calls of vendors and savor deep local flavors before setting sail.
✨ Must-Eat Highlight
- Zheng’s Famous Papaya Milk: As the very first stop, our guide naturally brought everyone to this legendary stall plastered with celebrity signatures! The rich, sweet, and creamy papaya milk instantly won over our international guests, who were eager to try Taiwan's unique beverage culture.
- Authentic Taiwanese Seafood Porridge & Charcoal BBQ: A steaming bowl packed with fresh shrimp, clams, and squid, paired with the irresistible aroma of sizzling skewers over charcoal, filled the air with pure culinary life. The vibrant energy and comforting flavors served as the absolute perfect finale to Mr. R's quick one-day getaway in Taiwan.
