The Wufeng Park was built in the commemoration of a governmental official named Wu Feng, who resolved disputes between the indigenous people and the Chinese plainsmen and won the respect and affection of the two rival groups of people.

During his incumbency, Wu Feng vowed to abolish the aboriginal custom of human sacrifice, a feat he eventually achieved, but only at the expense of his own life. The human sacrifice was to appease their gods and stop the spread of an infectious disease that was killing many of their people at the time. The aborigines vowed to sacrifice the plainsmen, to which Wu Feng agreed. What the aborigines didn’t realize is that the man sent to them was actually Wu Feng himself. After striking him down, they were so appalled by what they had done that they decided to end their practice of human sacrifice henceforth.

The park is enclosed and divided by low, red-clay walls. There are many octagonal, circular and jar-shaped openings, windows and doorways, providing intriguing multi-layered views through several of the park's enclosures. Walking around the park might give you an illusion of stepping back through time into 18th century Taiwan. Today, the park is the headquarters of the Alishan National Scenic Area due to its accessible location near the entrance to Alishan. It’s highly recommended to answer the call of nature and relieve yourself here before hitting the road as the next available bathroom is two hours away.
