Even though the east coast is not as flat as western Taiwan and land suitable for growing rice is scarce, the fact that there are so few factories that pollute the water in the east means the rice here grows beautifully. Although you won’t see endless rice paddies stretching before you as a result of the mountainous terrain, there is a stretch of road on the coastline between Baqi (芭崎) and Shitiping (石梯坪) where you will see the third most interesting rice paddy in Taiwan, after Gongliao (貢寮) and Bayan (八煙). Except at these three places, you hardly have the opportunity to see such beautiful rice paddies in Taiwan. Especially in the summertime, when the rice becomes like a golden wave that continues all the way to the coast, the combination of gold with the deep blue waves of the sea is very special. Some people even say that the rice in Xinshe has grown up listening to the song of the Pacific Ocean. Even if the rice paddies have just been harvested, you will still enjoy seeing the scarecrows standing guard here day and night. If you come in winter, don’t worry that there will be nothing to see, as many sunflowers are grown in the rice paddies. We guarantee you, tourists who drop by are sure to pull out their cameras in awe.
