Tianxiang (天祥), a large river terrace located on the eastern section of the Central Cross-Island Highway, features architecture from different cultures, including a Chinese temple, Western church, and traces of a Japanese Shinto shrine. It is the largest recreational area in the Taroko Gorge area and most visitors break to have a meal or stay overnight here. Friendly local food vendors often set up shop here to cater to park staff and visitors.

The Xiangde Temple (祥德寺) is the centerpiece of the terrace and is a popular spot for visitors and worshipers. At one end, a giant statute of the Bodhisattva Buddha stands on top of the terrace with the seven-story Tianfeng Pagoda (天峰塔) nearby, standing tall like a watchtower. Push yourself to climb to the top of this pagoda and be rewarded with an exquisite 360 degree lookout over the gorge and Tianxiang area. The Tianxiang Presbyterian Church (天祥基督教堂) and Catholic Church (天祥天主堂) are small but lovely churches with a history of over half a century. Relax and soak up the fresh mountain air in Wentianxiang Park (文天祥公園), where you will find traces of the Japanese Shinto shrine. The reason for this confluence of cultures in such a small place? Throughout Taiwan's complex history, it has been colonized and influenced by different countries including Spain, the Netherlands, and Japan.
