Sitting on one of the battlefields of the Sino-French War, New Taipei City Martyrs' Shrine tells the colonial and wartime history of Taiwan. During the Japanese Colonial Era, it was a shinto shrine venerating Emperor Meiji. After the war, the shrine was sadly destroyed and later converted into a martyrs shrine that honors the fallen soldiers. The foundation and the size of the shinto shrine has been retained, and the main body was rebuilt into a Chinese palace. The whole park boasts very elegantly rustic and nostalgic landscapes, including the front hall, the main hall, the gate to the monastery, memorial arches, monuments, a museum dedicated to the martyr soldiers, and the landscape garden. In the early days, there were pine trees all around the park that swing along with the breeze, which is known as one of the eight wonders in Tamsui at the time.

After all these years, the martyrs’ shrine is still in good condition. Apart from its foundation, the rest of the remains that could characterize it as a shinto shrine have all been removed by the government after the war. Even so, the quaint architecture, peaceful ambiance and rustic charm still draw in a significant number of lovebirds to shoot their wedding portraits here. Tamsui Old Street and Hobe Fort are both in the proximity of the area. With a bit of planning advance, a perfect one-day outing in Tamsui is guaranteed.
