As a prime area for exploring both Taiwan's vibrant folk faith and the unique temple arts and architecture, Lukang is home to a number of temples enshrining the goddess Mazu as the primary deity such as Xingan Temple. Though not as well-known as Lukang Mazu Temple, Xingan Temple is actually the first Mazu shrine in Lukang and therefore named a national historic site. Unlike Lukang Mazu Temple that caters to worshippers all around Taiwan, Xingan Temple was built by people immigrated from the same region in China and meanwhile served as a townsmen association in the early years. The foundations differ a lot, and this explains why Xingan Temple is not as bustling as the prestigious Lukang Mazu Temple.

The temple has retained its appearance as a quaint shophouse, which has two halls with an enclosed courtyard and is merely the size of a large bedroom. It is simple, small but quiet and not crowded, where you get to have a sense of calm while praying quietly and meaningfully. If you want to dodge the crowds flooding the Lukang Mazu Temple, Xingan Temple will give you an opportunity to pray in peace without being jostled by endless crowds of worshippers.
