No.6, Maxie St., Tamsui Dist., New Taipei City 251, Taiwan (R.O.C.)

At the time of Mackay’s arrival in Tamsui, most medical treatment costs were supported by foreign companies. In 1879, Mackay received donations from his relatives in Canada which he used to establish Mackay Hospital (滬尾偕醫館). This was the first Western hospital in Northern Taiwan, and served as the predecessor to the present day Mackay Memorial Hospital in downtown Taipei.

One thing that is particularly worthy of mention is that this hospital was built in a Chinese architectural style yet incorporated Western style windows. Try to spot this distinct feature when you visit. Its days of treating the infirm have long since passed, and the hospital now serves as an exhibition space that displays original medical equipment and antiques left by Mackay. If not in a rush, consider enjoying a cup of cappuccino in the café and let your imagination run free about the days long passed.
