Located on a hill in Tamsui, Hobe Fort boasts a history of more than a century. The fort was set up after the Sino-French War by the Taiwan governor Liu Ming-chuan, who had realized the importance of the mouth of Tamsui River. In the early days, transportation on land was not convenient, so lots of supplies were transported to Taipei through water. Things were the same in wartime. Some commanders once thought it would be more efficient to stop the enemy’s attack to enter Taipei by sinking boats at the mouth of Tamsui River, yet the existence of the fort was proven to be more substantial. Although the four advanced cannons imported from Germany and the trenches surrounding the walls have disappeared, the walls built of bricks and the German cement keep Hobe Fort more intact than other forts in northern Taiwan. Cannon emplacements on the walls are open to the public, and so are the tunnels and ammunition depots. On the interior walls are arrays of holes, whose function is to fix sticks and decks, so the soldiers could have some sleep inside the fort. In addition, you can see rugged bricks on the top of the walls. These uneven surfaces were traces left by slogans once hung on the walls when the KMT had retreated to Taiwan and utilized the fort. Because the fort remains intact, many Taiwanese movies have chosen to shoot here. Occasionally, there are also some artists exhibiting their works here.
