For many tourists—especially those from abroad, there is no sufficient reason to visit Chiayi City. Many tourists staying a night in downtown Chiayi reluctantly simply because they cannot get a room in Alishan. Since a night in Chiayi is inevitable, those who want to kill time go to Chiayi's most popular Wenhua Road Night Market. Although not more famous than Taipei's Shihlin Night Market, nor is it bigger than Taichung's Fengjia Night Market, Chiayi Wenhua Road Night Market boasts the local specialties only served in Chiayi on the 500-meter long pedestrian area. For example, one of the well-known dishes is Chiayi's turkey rice. Sliced or shredded turkey on rice doused in rouzao (Taiwanese meat sauce, 肉燥) and chicken gravy draws many Taiwanese to Chiayi just for a bowl of it. Tourists who do not plan their trip in advance and have no idea which eatery is the most authentic can go to Penshui Turkey Rice (噴水火雞肉飯), where the late president Chiang Ching-kuo had dined three times. On the other side of the central fountain stands Yuxiangwu (源興御香屋), a beverage bar selling the best grapefruit green tea in the whole Taiwan. The most famous and cannot be missed out place is definitely Lin, Cong-ming Fish Head in Casserole (林聰明砂鍋魚頭). Fish caught from Zengwen Reservoir is deep-fried and flavored with Shacha sauce (沙茶醬) before boiled in broth with various vegetables. People find the tasty dish unforgettable with just a sip of the rich soup. Besides, there is still another feature of the night market. People can always find stores open on Wenhua Road. In the morning, clothing stores and fruit stands are running business, while sweetmeat shops open in the afternoon. After the night falls, small eateries welcome their customers till breakfast joints take over in the early morning.
