It would be an understatement to say Aunt’s Restaurant maintains a low profile. Hidden in a couldn’t-be-more-normal apartment, Aunt’s Restaurant in Hualien operates on a word-of-mouth basis and is extremely popular among locals and tourists alike. These people are more than willing to spend the time queuing up and waiting for tables.

Aunt’s Restaurant offers the prix fixe menu in the city of Hualien, whose extensive menu makes it a good bet to dine with friends and family. Items on the menu include a variety of dishes from appetizers to main courses and desserts. The deep-fried cuttlefish has a Thai sweet chilli base that gives a mild chilli kick. The fresh lettuce leaves add to the complexity of the texture and bring perfect balance to the slightly greasy cuttlefish. The Matsuzaka pork sliced into just the right thickness is tender and succulent, and the special sauce made from minced garlic and soy sauce offers the perfect yin to the yang of this yummilicious treat. What comes at the very end of the meal is a plate of taro rolls. Crispy on the outside and stuffed with salted egg yolk on the inside, these golden brown taro rolls are surprisingly refreshing and become a mainstay of many patrons’ tables.

Advertised by word of mouth and blogs as well as media coverage, Aunt’s Restaurant grows rapidly in popularity, so it is highly recommended to make a reservation at least two weeks ahead, or risk the overwhelming sense of regret when you have to wait in the long queue.
