By far the most characteristic feature of Nanhai Road is its high density of museums, occasionally leading to a debate of which should to first visit. It's fairly safe to assume, though, that the National Museum of History (國立歷史博物館) is the most eye-catching of the bunch with its traditional Chinese architectural design. This museum houses a permanent collection of Tang Dynasty era bronze sculptures and glazed pottery, including numerous national treasures of rare design. Impressive to say the least, the Chinese artifacts on display cover a period of history lasting 6000 years.

Unlike most history museums that limit themselves to ancient relics, the NMH aims to remain relevant by positioning itself as a platform for modern art history. Serving as the location of the National Gallery, the third floor is devoted to exhibiting famed Taiwanese contemporary artists' works. With its continuously rotating exhibitions, the National Gallery provides an excellent reason to make return trips to the museum.

With so much on offer, tea breaks are an essential way of managing a visit. Patrons are lucky to have two cafes on the premises, both of which offer tempting snacks and exquisite views of the surrounding Botanical Gardens.

The majority of the first floor has been partitioned off with its own entrance to service the special exhibits which change seasonally and require a separate admission ticket. Past exhibits have included a Disney collection of original artwork and designs and “The Divine Michelangelo”.
