Fo Guang Shan is located in Dashu District, Kaohsiung City. ‘Fo Guan’ means the light of Buddha. It is Taiwan's largest Buddhist temple area, which is founded by Master Hsingyun. He advocated the "Humanistic Buddhism", hoping to bring the peace and love to the real world, not after life (which is quite debatable). He led his following monks to build the temple brick by brick initially from 1967. Later on, under many disciples’ support, Fo Guang Shan became the most popular Buddhism organization and the most prestigious shrine in Taiwan. However, due to many years of frequent visit of disciples, it was closed in 1997 to ease the disturbance to the practicing of monks. They only open shortly during Chinese New Year. Fo Guang Shan later on upgraded the facility to promote tourism in the southern region in Taiwan and reopen to public from the New Year's Day in 2001. Except Monday, Fo Guang Shan open to public every day.

In addition to the main temple building, the most characteristic building in Fo Guang Shan is the Buddha City design. The city is surrounded by 480 small golden painted Buddha statues, creating a solemn scene. In addition, Buddhism relics exhibition hall collects thousands of pieces of heritages around the world. It’s worth visiting indeed. The busiest season of Fo Guang Shan is during the Lunar New Year to the Lantern Festival. The mountain is covered with lanterns, becoming a sea of lights at night. You can seize this opportunity to visit the lantern Fo Guang Shan.
