Located at an altitude of over 2,100 meters, Sister Ponds in Alishan are in fact two individual alpine ponds. The Elder Sister Pond (姊潭) has a surface area of approximately 530 m2, and that of the Younger Sister Pond (妹潭) is around 66 m2. Visitors can walk along the 180-meter-long trail that encircles the two ponds to appreciate their beauty from all angles. You will even find a lovely pavilion made of cypress wood sitting quietly in the middle of the Elder Sister Pond.

However, there is a sad story behind the scenic ponds. Legend has it that two sisters from the indigenous Zhou tribe (鄒族) fell in love with the same man. They didn’t want to ruin their sisterhood so eventually decided to commit suicide by throwing themselves into these ponds, hence the name. But legends are often skillfully created, not naturally developed. It turns out that the love story was made up by a local photographer who tried to attract more visitors to take pictures at Sister Pond.
